The novel’s dedication to I.V. Pavlov, the publisher of the “Moskovsky Vestnik” (Moscow Gazette), helps us to realize that Pavlov’s and Saltykov-Shchedrin’s ideological standing was the opposite of Slavophilia, which is reflected in the selection of songs. PAVLOV AND SALTYKOV-SHCHEDRIN’S NOVEL “THE SUITER” This paper deals with Saltykov-Shchedrin’s novel “The Suiter” whose text is full of folk songs. Their accurate identification shows us that the writer picked out those works that had a bit of a reputation. The cult of folk songs (which was very peculiar to 1850s) was maintained by the Slavophile youth, especially by the “young editors” working in the “Moskvityanin”. The novel’s dedication that was addressed to I.V. Pavlov, the publisher of the “MoskovskyVestnik” can help us to understand that the ideological viewpoints of Pavlov and ovSaltykiv-Shchedrin was opposite to Slavophilism, which affected the choice of songs.
